  6. QuoteMan provides you with a welcome break from computing by occasionally interrupting you to display a thoughtful or meaningful quote.

  21. Simply copy the QuoteMan program onto your hard drive. You might also want to make an alias to QuoteMan in the Startup Items folder so that it runs everytime you turn on your computer.

  23. Note: If you are using a version of the System Software prior to 7.5, you’ll want to copy the contents of the “Pre–System 7.5” folder into your System Folder. If you already have these files, do not bother replacing them.

  26. Using QuoteMan

  28. QuoteMan is a simple little program, so it’s easy to operate. There is no required setup and should operate “out of the box.” However, if you want to customize the way that it works, there are several options that you may modify.

  30. Font Options: When QuoteMan displays a quote, you can choose a font and/or size from the appropriate menu to modify the appearance of quotes. QuoteMan will remember your choices the next time you run it.

  32. Preferences: Choosing “Preferences” from the Edit menu allows you to modify the way QuoteMan behaves.

  50. If you want to increase or decrease the time between quotes, modify the value in “Display every _x_ minutes”. If this item is checked (as in the example above), QuoteMan will interrupt you after the specified time. If it is unchecked, QuoteMan will never interrupt you.

If you want to increase or decrease the time until a quote goes away automatically, modify the value in “Go away after _x_ seconds”. If this item is checked (as in the example above), QuoteMan will automatically close the quote window after the specified time. If unchecked, you must always close the window yourself.

  54. QuoteMan can play a sound to get your attention whenever it displays a quote. You can pick the sound of your choice from the popup menu. You can also tell QuoteMan to not play a sound by unchecking this item.

  56. A check mark next to “Politically correct” tells QuoteMan that you might be offended by questionable ideologies and/or profanity. QuoteMan will not display such quotes if this option is turned on.

  61. QuoteMan comes with a pretty sizeable database of quotes, but registering (see “Registering QuoteMan” below) allows you to add quotes of your own.

  77. Selecting “Add Quote…” from the File menu will display the above dialog. Type in the text of your quote and then enter the source. After you are finished, hit the OK button and your quote will be entered in the QuoteMan database.

  80. About the Quote Database

QuoteMan comes with a sizeable database of “canned” quotes. The quotes were chosen to provoke thought, for amusement value and a host of other reasons. It may be possible that you will find many of them offensive, stupid, racist, etc. If you find this to be the case, please utilize the “Politically Correct” feature in the preferences dialog.

  87. QuoteMan is shareware. That means you can use it for awhile before you buy it. If you decide to use QuoteMan permanently, you can register by sending a check or money order (U.S. funds only) for five (5) dollars to:

After we receive your payment, we will return a postcard to you with your registration number. Please be sure to include your name and address in any correspondence. Also, including your email address will get you your registration number faster and save me the cost of postage. If you would like the most recent version pre-registered on a disk, add another five (5) dollars.

  95. We’ve put a great deal of time and effort into programming QuoteMan as well as putting together the quote database. We would like to continue writing shareware, but a less than enthusiastic response to QuoteMan will ensure that we won’t. Please register.
